An evocative painting of a scene from the Winter Gardens in Morecambe by a mother-of-two has been accepted for a major London exhibition.

Jean Palmer's oil painting titled 'On the Balcony' depicts part of the decorative upper staircase at the once-proud theatre.

palmer_crop2.jpg The artist’s nine-year-old daughter Ellen poses for the atmospheric balcony scene, which she hopes will form part of a series of interiors from the Victorian theatre, which closed its doors in 1977.
Jean, of Skerton, said:” I have always been fascinated by the architecture of the place.  The dimly lit interior reflects past glories and hints at the stunning venue it could become.” Jean teaches part-time at Lancaster adult college and studies art at the University of Central Lancashire, then based at the Story Institute.  She has exhibited in private London galleries as well as at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and has completed commissions.

The painting will be exhibited at The Society of Woman Artists 146th open exhibition in London’s Mall Galleries from the end of next month until June 10th
