The Winter Gardens Preservation Trust welcomed two special visitors to the theatre on 27th September 2012.
Joan and Gary Morecambe, the widow and son of Eric Morecambe were in the resort for a short tour of some of the landmarks connected with the comedy legend. After revisiting the statue of Eric on the promenade, Joan and Gary called in at the Winter Gardens, to take a trip down memory lane and to see the latest restoration work. Evelyn Archer, the Chair of the Winter Gardens Preservation Trust, showed the visitors the recent improvements to the auditorium. Joan particularly admired the work on the auditorium parquet floor; praising the efforts of the volunteers in bringing the theatre back to life.
Gary, a Patron of the Winter Gardens, was delighted to see the new portrait collection, including one depicting his father with comic partner Ernie Wise. A print of the picture was presented to both Gary and Joan as a momento of their visit to the theatre.
Following interviews with the BBC and local press, the pair departed in Eric’s Rolls Royce, driven by his chauffeur, Mike Fountain. They had certainly brought sunshine to the theatre where Eric once performed.
